Back In The Saddle Again

The last part of summer just about wiped me out. Two soccer tournaments, a big shindig in honor of our Rabbi, and the general chaos of back to school. Add in a new computer and all that entails and my little corner of the internet was sadly neglected. But now that the school year starts I'm back in the saddle again.

Sunset on a Busy Weekend

Between band, soccer, and lacrosse I logged a lot of miles this weekend.

It all started with a game Friday night. Rebecca's team was invited to be ball girls for the VCU women's match up. The girls were stationed along the edge of the field, each one in charge of a soccer ball. If a ball went out of bounds the nearest ball girl would hand her ball to the player and then chase down the errant ball. It got very cold, but the girls remained cheerful and had a grand time noshing on popcorn during halftime.

Then on Saturday it was soccer games for the dynamic duo, lacrosse tourney for Nate, and a band competition for Jacob. I did soccer duty while Larry dropped off Jacob and took Nate. It was a long day with Jacob's bus arriving an hour later than originally scheduled.

Today I was very thankful that it was not our turn for the Sunday school carpool, I happily  pushed Max and Rebecca out the  door at 8:30 and enjoyed a few hours of piece and quiet. Larry meanwhile took Nate to day two of lacrosse before heading out for a game of his own. It was up to me to collect Nate, which I did after Rebecca's rare Sunday afternoon game.

Everybody had a good time, but I think they will be glad this busy weekend is over when they head back to school.

Looking Forward to the Weekend

Lots of big doings going on around here this weekend. We have grandparents visiting, a football game, and the start of Hebrew school to name a few. Even the red boys have something happening.

My Little Cupcake

Rebecca by Teckelcar

We had services! dog shows! fly fishing clinic! movies! and music lessons!

A lot was going on and somehow we pulled it off. We are at that sweet spot in parenting when some of the kids are old enough to be left in charge and the younger ones are not too young to be left with their siblings. So I was able to to make my 8:00 am ring times without having to schlep my entourage. Rebecca was initially interesting in tagging along, but my 7:00 am departure squashed that idea right quick.

Mind you I grumbled mightily over the injustice of having to be at the dog show at 8 for both days, but then again I would be back home before 10:00 am. Thus enabling a little movie going Saturday afternoon. I missed services (everybody else in the family went), but then again I did go Friday night and help make the minyan.

Sunday morning was another early start with Larry going off with Jake to learn a bit more about fly fishing. This left the rest of the crew at home. Nate, Max and Rebecca were still essentially asleep, but I did rouse them enough to remind them I would be back before 10 am. Sunday afternoon was a bit easier with music lessons at home for Nate (guitar), Max (drums, and Larry (bass).

As for my little cupcake pictured, she's just little bit of cuteness at the end of a busy weekend.

Life of a Suburban Mom

Having four kids in three schools and three different grade levels is turning out to be quite a challenge. Between the disparate schedules, homework, and activities I'm one busy band/soccer/baseball mom.

I knew things would not be easy, Jake leaves for school before 7 am with Nate following a half hour later and Max and Rebecca at 8:45. Then it gets tricky on Jake's non band days I have to collect him at 1:45 (the bus is a nightmare, he's out of district so he has to take two buses each way at, get this, 5:45 am and back home around 3:30 or so). Then Nate appears at 3:30 and the dynamic duo at around 4. Add in a morning walk, this leaves 9:30 to 1:30 to get things done. Four piddling child free hours.

And once they are home there is homework to do (or whine about), music to play and sports to practice. Admittedly the sports are self inflicted, but my kids need the physical outlet and it gets them outside and moving.

Then there is band.

I had absolutely no idea what we were getting into. Mind you I think it is completely worth it, the kids are great and I think it is a great activity for Jake. But oy! It is not an activity for the faint of heart. With three day a week after school practices, football games and competitions I don't foresee much in the way of spare time.

So yeah, I'm just a wee bit busy.

Full Speed Ahead

Today was one of those crazy "you have four kids that do sports and music" kind of days.

Between waiting for piano to end, dropping off kids for practice, rounding up boy from marching band (took two tries and I'm eternally thankful for the fact he goes to the high school 8 minutes away as opposed to one 45 minutes away) I had to feed said children, sternly remind them to do homework while I was out (I disabled the TV to prevent "accidental" viewings) and go to a Marching Band Boosters meeting.

My life is full of the crazy.

The amazing thing was that we all got to where we needed to be when we needed to be there. Well except for picking up Jake the second time, but then again he was off schedule and I had to shoe horn him in after sports drop off.

Thus is the life of a marching band, soccer, and baseball mom. Now with drums, piano, trumpet, and starting this weekend-guitar.

Things To Do

This is what I have planned for Saturday:

1) Start making ribs for Sunday (it just ain't the 4th of July without ribs).

2) Get some fresh tomatoes from my favorite farm stand.

3) Watch some World Cup soccer. Today's game between Brazil and the Netherlands was outstanding. There was great game play and superior officiating.

4) Try to find all my lawn flags.

5) Decorate bikes for the parade on Sunday.

6) Go listen to Max's drum teacher perform at Grandpa Eddie's. Max is very excited that he gets to watch him perform.
