This week has been a total wash in regards to school. Monday was a holiday, Tuesday school was cancelled in anticpation of the snow fall, and there has been no school since then plus Friday has been called as well.
All we got was barely 2 inches of fine powdery snow. However this fine powder quickly compacted to ice that gets thoroughly frozen each night as the temps dip well below freezing. I ventured out Wednesday and it was a white kuckle ride down the hill in my subdivision. I didn't skid, but I could feel how little traction my relatively new tires had. Today was much better, but there are still areas in the school district that are still icebound. The upshot is that Monday's planned student holiday/teacher workday is now a regular school day.
School or no school, Larry has the right idea. It is a good time to read a good book with a dog in your lap.

Artist of the Week: Lumberjack Larry
My husband is this week's artist for getting the job done.
Last month Larry decided to do something about the holly tree next to the house. It was too close to the house and was blocking the light in his office. He hauled out his chainsaw, cleaned it off , and got it ready for action. A short while later we had one less holly tree and a whole lot of light in the front room.
I do a fair amount of tinkering in the house, plumbing and what not, but the chainsaw is wholly his domain. Honestly I am a bit scared of the dang thing and I'm glad he is able to handle it so well. Larry neatly cut down the stump, you can just see it under his left foot, and hauled away the tree. The chainsaw was then tucked away until the next time something needs to be cut up.
It really is amazing how much brighter the room is without the tree blocking the window. My man of action is a lumberjack and he's more than okay.

Happy Father's Day to the Man
The man of my heart, who is a great dad and a dang good goalie to boot.
Larry spent the weekend with Nate at a lacrosse tournament that Nate's team had entered. Toting all of Nate's gear and making sure Nate was on time, at the right place with all his equipment. No mean feat considering they were far from home. Then, when is was all over, Larry went directly to his game north of Richmond .
A very busy weekend, but not an usual one, for a such a good dad on his day.

20 Years Ago Yesterday
Wednesday was a very busy day.
20 years ago Larry and I said I do, so the plan was for a night out. Which got complicated when Nate's 6pm to 8pm lacrosse practice shifted to that day. Coupled with a fancy hair cut I earned by doing a spot of photography for the salon's owners, my day was spent zipping around Richmond.
Something had to give, hence the lack of post on Wednesday.
And it was a good decision. We had a lovely time at our favorite fancy restaurant, Juleps. It was nice being able to linger over an exquisitely prepared meal. The service was discrete with the nice little touch of the menu saying "Happy Anniversary" across the top (Larry told them when making the reservation).
And the fancy haircut, well it's rather rock'n'roll with a side of aubergine.

Lax Man
Sorry about the lack of posts, I've been a bit busy.
Of the many things going on I finally went to watch Larry play lacrosse. He is part of a masters (essentially post college age and up) level lacrosse club. They play a pick-up game pretty much every Saturday morning. He's been going for quite sometime and is one of the very few goalies in the club.
Anyhoo it was my turn to drive the car pool to Sunday school, so after I dropped off the kids I headed on over. It was a bit damp, but that did not inhibit the guys one bit. It looked like they were all having a good time. I spent just about 45 minutes watching the action and taking pictures.
If you click on the picture here it'll take you to my photostream and you can see three more lacrosse pictures.
Going to the game was a fun way to spend the morning.

Hollywood Comes To Richmond
Spielberg is in town filming the movie "Lincoln"and it just so happens that a chunk of the filming is occurring near my husband's office. He brought in our camera to work today so he could take a better class of picture than he can with his cell phone. This shot came out particularly well and shows some of the tents pitched on the capitol grounds and addition built onto the capitol itself.
It is a big deal up in Richmond with the production crew snarling traffic as they take over the city. The extras are dining in Larry's building and stretches of cobblestones around the capitol square have been covered with dirt.
I would love to go see the filming, but then again I'm very glad I don't have to be up there.

Hey Nineteen!
Today you get double post goodness, not only is it Memorial Day, but it is also our nineteenth wedding anniversary.
Nineteen years, four kids, and three houses. We have been very, very busy. And I wouldn't trade away any of it.
Larry stated that he looks forward to at least another 40 happy years together. To that I reply, as I did 19 years ago, I do.
Happy anniversary to my sweetheart. You make everything in my life better.

Artist of the Week: Photography
This week Larry gets to be artist of the week.
Yes, that's my husband from way back. Long before I ever met him. He is such a cute little boy, you can definitely see the resemblance with our children, Nate in particular. I like to think we would have been friends, we have so much in common. However, we grew up world's apart and didn't meet until college.
And we have been together ever since.
Anyhoodle, enough with the mushy stuff. I'm writing here about art and the art form in question is photography.
For the most part I'm the family photographer. I spend the most time with the kids and I like to take pictures. But once in a while Larry is able to wrest the camera from me, usually it's when we are on vacation or a family outing. And the pictures he takes are always interesting, he's no slouch with the camera.
Thus bringing us to one of my favorite pictures.
This picture was from back in Nov., 2010. Larry took it when we were visiting a friend and giving the kids a chance to ride a horse (well in actuality it was a pony, a really nice pony). Since I was the one who had he most experience with horses I was the one wrangling the kids. Mind you Larry can ride as well, but I was the one who had taken years and years of lessons.
So I was busy with the kid and pony show and Larry had the camera. He took a ton of great photos that day. Rebecca, Max and Nate (Jake was home for various reasons) were having a great time and all three got to ride by themselves all the way up to a trot. There were lots of smiling faces that day.
But this picture I think was the best. Rebecca is leading the pony to the barn with our friend. We had just fetched our steed from the pasture and were bringing her in to be groomed and tacked up. The backlighting and long shadows make a very compelling image and I love the little bit of lens flare.
I just think this is a spectacular shot.

Happy Father's Day!
This an old picture, but it's one of my favorites. My best guess is this was taken in 2002, about mid-year judging by Max and Rebecca.
As always Nate is a goof and I just can't get over his short hair. I've become so accustomed to his long curly locks that I'm always surprised by pictures of him from just a couple of years back.
Anyhoodle, I love Larry's confident yet relaxed expression. He really is a great father to our brood and I think it shines through in this picture.
So happy Father's Day to all of the men that are helping mold and create tomorrow's generation.

Happy Birthday to the One I Love
I'm just wishing a quick happy birthday to the guy that captured my heart.
He wasn't this young when we met, but I have been with him for over half of my life.
The post is a bit late, I was busy today having a nice birthday lunch with Larry and then getting him his present. And then, horrors of horrors, children wanted to actually use the computer for their homework.
What is the world coming to?
So it's late, but that's life.
Happy Birthday Larry!

They Might Be Giants: "Meet the Elements" (BB Video)
Larry found this and sent it along to me and the kids.
I love it. I always been a fan of They Might Be Giants and this is so delightfully nerdy.
My inner geek is dancing along.

Sunrise Walk
I consider myself a decent photographer. I took a class many, many moons ago in high school and learned the basics, from f-stops to black and white film developing.
I loved it.
The whole process of composing a shot, developing the film, making a contact sheet and deciding how to crop and pint the photo was like a wonderful form of alchemy to me. The acrid smell of the chemicals, the mysteries of the film bag it was all great fun for me.
But after the class that was it. I had no dark room so I had to be content with what I could do through the view finder.
After I got married my husband got a digital camera fairly early on, it was a fairly nice Kodak, but I resisted it. The shutter speed was annoyingly slow. When I hit the button I want the picture taken now, not a fraction or so of a second later. Then I started using it more as I started to appreciate the amount of control I had with the pictures afterward.
With my current camera I have found happiness. It has an acceptable shutter speed and I have a fair amount of control in how it takes pictures. Most of the time I happy with the full automatic mode, but there are times I use the natural light setting. I love how I can instantly check and see if I got shot I was hoping for. Then I get to upload my pictures onto my computer and futz with them to my heart's content.
Usually all I'm doing is cropping and adjusting the brightness. Occasionally I venture into tint and and a few other tricks like sharpness. I still like to compose my pictures in the veiwfinder.
And then every now and then I get one that is perfect straight out of the camera. This is one of them, all I had to do was rotate it 90 degrees and hit save.
The reflections on the water and the sun flare came out just right. I was able to shoot it just so I got the right amount of flare to make everything sparkle. The image is crisp and balanced. This is one of those times I think of myself as a very good photographer.

The Apple Doesn't Fall Very Far
Nate for the past year has been growing his hair. After the fiorst few disastrous attempts to shape his unruly mop we have settled on a mutually acceptable haircut. A cut, mind you, that I have been saying for quite some gives him a serious 70's vibe.
This weekend I got irrefutable proof that Nate is channeling the mid-seventies. Larry's mom sent us a mailer crammed with a huge number of photographs. There are pictures of long gone relatives, portraits of Larry's mom with her siblings and a few of Larry and his brother when they were much younger.
The one that made me laugh was Larry's fourth grade picture from 1975. It turns out at age 10 he had exactly the same haircut Nate has at age 10 in fourth grade. Their faces are different, but lord the similarities are striking.
Even better we got a picture of Larry with his baseball team. Larry's hair is a bit fluffier and his face a bit squarer, but you can see the resemblance. I think the expressions match better when I switch Nate's face between the baseball and the head shot comparisons, but you get the idea.
I think they are both unbelievably cute and I feel like I had contributed nothing at all to Nate's appearance. At least I have Jake and Max to console me, although Max looks more like my brother than me.

Artist of the Week: Soup
This week's artist is my husband.
I'm not sure when this particular picture was taken, Larry looks to be about three or so. I honestly don't know. However, he certainly was a cute little guy and I can definitely see a resemblance between Larry and Nate. They are also temperamentally the most alike. While watching Nate hurl himself about Larry often tells me he was just like that.
Anyhoo many moons have passed and the little boy pictured here is all grown up and a father to a whole passel of kids. He has also become a pretty darn good potager. The most impressive part is that he is completely self taught. All I have done is tell him how to use the crock pot and get some twist top containers (much better for bring to work) to store his soup. He does it all, from the shopping, the chopping and to the cooking.
The whole soup thing came about as a good way for us to save money and provide Larry a healthy lunch. One big batch from the crock pot usually sees him through the week.
When he makes his soup he loads up the crock pot with all the vegetables he loves. I think he really enjoys the whole process of chopping things up and adding whatever spices appeal to him. He'll even toss in some roast chicken if we have leftovers in the fridge. The kitchen always smells great on soup night.
Once the soup is done he loads up the little containers I bought for him. The screw tops really make difference when you are transporting something as liquid as soup to work. The last thing you want to deal with at work is a big spill of soup in the office or, even worse, in the car. At least in the office you can get it mopped up fairly quickly.
There is also the little side benefit that he doesn't have to go out to pick up a hot lunch. A nice thing indeed last week when it kept on raining.

Happy Birthday Larry
Well I just got this one in under the line.
Originally I wanted to make him artist of the week, he used to make absolutely beautiful mazes. Unfortunately we just can't seem to find them. I've looked everywhere for the book he tucked them in, from the garage to the attic. Someday they'll show up.
Anyhoo, today is my sweetie's birthday. It wasn't terribly exciting, but sometimes that is just what you need. We'll do our big night out on the town later. Meryl has magnanimously offered to take on all four kids overnight at her place. They are all very excited over the prospect of staying over at Aunt Meryl's house and playing with her Wii.
So happy birthday Larry.

Curaçao Honeymoon
Over at Meryl's Soccer Dad posted about the oldest synagogues in the western hemisphere. Well it turns out that Larry and I visited the oldest, Mikvé Israel-Emanuel, while we were on our honeymoon in Curaçao.We were there in June of 1992 and it was absolutely gorgeous.
After a bit of digging I found a roll from our trip and I'll share a few of the pictures we took of the synagogue and the Jewish Cultural Museum. First up is a picture of the organ and some of the chandeliers inside the sanctuary.
It was beautiful inside the building. My pictures really don't do it justice, the dark mahogany wood, the bright sunlight streaming in and the white paint conspired to confound my film. But I did get a few good shots and if you click through the picture it will lead you to the picture set. I don't remember much, other than the building being very cool and airy inside.
We then ventured forth through the courtyard connecting the museum to the synagogue. Larry is standing the gateway separating the two. Inside the museum were a few artifacts from the Jewish community of Curaçao.
I remember the museum was quite small and we had to go up a flight of stairs. Inside the first thing that caught your eye was the fully set Seder table safely contained by plexi-glass. Nearby was a display of scrolls and judging by the illumination on the bottom one, I think there was at least one megillah. Which is rather ironic. The two things I photographed are about the holiday we just had (Purim) and the one that we are preparing for (Passover).
At the very end of the picture set is the street entrance to the building. It is a rather plain door set in the wall outside the Synagogue. For whatever reason that is the only external picture I have. For a souvenir we picked up a couple of copies of the sisterhood's cookbook in the museum. I'm going to try out a few recipes and post the results at a later date.

Daddy's Home!
Larry got to come home Tuesday night. I was there in the afternoon when his Doctor was scheduled to stop by. He was very pleased with how Larry was coming along and said he would be free to go home tomorrow or, if we wanted to push the matter, that night.
We seized on the idea of springing him out that night. I mentioned that I would be busy with Max at the CF clinic the next morning and soon it was settled that I'd be picking up Larry later in the day.
It's such a relief for us all to have him home. Larry no longer has to deal with the constant intrusions from the hospital staff, I no longer have to drive back an forth to a hospital 40 minutes away and the kids... well they're just happy to have their daddy back home.

Busy, Busy, Busy
My poor husband has been stuck in the hospital since Thursday. It was a planned event; he went in for abdominal surgery that will ultimately result in a much happier hubby.
But in the meantime I'm driving back and forth to the hospital until he comes back home.
I'm lucky that Larry has a wonderful mom. She came down Wednesday with her husband to help out. They were able to manage kids and school buses while I drove Larry up the hospital. They were also still around this weekend while I had to shuttle Nate to soccer practice and a baseball clinic. It was so nice to be able to leave the other three home with their beloved grandparents and not have to listen to them whine about how bored they are. Sadly Herb and Diane left for home today so I'm on my own until Larry comes back home. Admittedly won't be up to speed, but he'll be home. Although I do miss my mother in law's mad house keeping skills.

Happy Birthday Larry!
Today, or at least what's left of it, is my dear husband's birthday.
I called him up at work today to get dinner menu approval (steak and oven roasted potatoes, I knew he would say yes, I just wanted to tell him) and ask what kind of cake he wanted. He settled on the Hershey's Three Chocolate Layered Cheesecake that everybody seems to be making.
Larry then got treated to lunch by his coworkers and got throughly cookied and caked out. He really has a nice place to work at, makes me miss the days I used to to work outside of the home.
Anyway my creation looked gorgeous, but would have benefited with sitting in the fridge overnight to allow the cake to firm up and the flavors to develop, but it was still tasty. Next year I need to remember to ask him a day ahead.
