Last Bit of Summer

Beach by Teckelcar
Beach, a photo by Teckelcar on Flickr.
Sunday we took advantage of the return of summer weather by going to the beach, specifically Virginia Beach's Little Island Park. A sweet gem of a beach that is south of all the bustle and lights of Virginia Beach proper.

I found out it's existence when taking Rebecca to her soccer game over in Chesapeake.  Since we were so close to the ocean I thought it would be nice to go to the beach after her game.  I did a little searching online the night before and found Little Island Park. Sadly she had too much homework, so we headed straight home, but I took note of the beach for a possible future trip. Larry liked the idea and we looked at our calendar for an open date. The earliest we could go turned out to be Oct. 6th.

The weather cooled and it looked a bit doubtful, but as luck would have it summer came back. The warm weather was forecasted to extend to Sunday, so we made our plans and told the kids on Saturday. Jacob begged off, he had plans with friends. This was no surprise as he is not a huge fan of the whole beach thing. Nate too wanted to stay home, he had homework to finish. We almost lost Max and Rebecca, but we convinced them to go. It was going to be a nice trip for just the four of us.

And it was a perfect day to go to the beach. It was warm with a good breeze, the beach wasn't crowded, and best of all the ocean was a lovely temperature to swim in. Around here October is a wonderful time to go to the beach. It's off season so the traffic and parking issues of high summer are nonexistent. Yet the ocean is still warm and you can still get the odd hot spell that makes it all perfect.

It was a lovely last bit of summer.

Under the Weather

Most of us have been sick the past few days.I think Jacob was first with a runny nose and cough. Max felt off last Friday and I ended up picking him up early from school. I succumbed over the weekend and just now I'm able to have coherent thoughts, hence the "Chicken!" post on Sunday. Rebecca only made it partway through school today and I had to go fetch her. Meanwhile Nate has been off school the past two days, which means I've gotten to hear the automated phone system from the high school butcher his name twice.

As for the picture, it is from this year's county fair. It was an incredibly rainy day and I asked Max if I could take his picture as we waited for Aunt Meryl. Don't let the expression fool you, Max had a great time getting all wet. The expression was all his idea.

Nana and the Kids

Nana and the kids by Teckelcar

Or what I was doing last week.

We did our annual summer trek up North last week to visit family and get away from the special joy of Virgina in the summer.   I'm happy to say that we were successful on both fronts.

Vermont was wonderful, low 80s during the day and mid-50s at night. We even missed the massive thunderstorms since we left Friday morning. Saturday I called a neighbor and she checked the house and said it was fine.   Sadly our vacation had to come to an end and we had to return to the blast furnace that is Virginia .

Happy Father's Day to the Man

Da Goalie by Teckelcar
Da Goalie, a photo by Teckelcar on Flickr.
The man of my heart, who is a great dad and a dang good goalie to boot.

Larry spent the weekend with Nate at a lacrosse tournament that Nate's team had entered. Toting all of Nate's gear and making sure Nate was on time, at the right place with all his equipment. No mean feat considering they were far from home. Then, when is was all over, Larry went directly to his game north of Richmond .

A very busy weekend, but not an usual one, for a such a good dad on his day.

Happy Birthday and Goodbye

Rebecca_and_Nanci by Teckelcar
Rebecca_and_Nanci, a photo by Teckelcar on Flickr.
Saturday was a good friend's 50th birthday. Saturday was also the day she lost her battle with ovarian cancer.

I don't have very many pictures of Nanci, but I have this one from almost 10 years ago with Rebecca.

This was before cancer came
and took her hair
and took her health
and took her life.

This was before her husband lost his friend.

This was before her son lost his mother, his biggest fan, and was robbed of the chance to bask in her pride at his high school graduation next month.

This was before her father's heart was broken.

This was before I lost a person that can't be replaced.

She lived her life to the fullest.

She was a doer and accomplished amazing things in her life.

When she was diagnosed three and half years ago with stage IIIc ovarian cancer she did not sit idly by. She rolled up her sleeves and fought it tooth and nail. She started a foundation, The Circle of Strength, to raise awareness, funds for research, and a place for support.

She fought so hard those three and a half years, but the cancer and the treatments took their toll and her body could take no more.

She celebrated her birthday a month early. Her friends came together and threw a huge party. She was wheelchair bound, but she had a wonderful time. Nanci was always in her element when she was at a party. That last party was the greatest gift.

I will miss my friend.

MCP Project 52: Traditions

The picture 2011 by Teckelcar
The picture 2011, a photo by Teckelcar on Flickr.
This week's theme was all about traditions and fittingly enough it was time for own annual photo of the kids and dogs.

My children are never particularly thrilled with this annual , but they are good sports about it. This year they got to choose the location, which probably helped their mood. They have also learned that the more cooperative they are the sooner we are done.

For me , however, it's a fun tradition. I get an annual picture of them all together and I can see how they have grown over the years. The picture then gets incorporated into our holiday card and the photo calendar I make each year. As I go back over years through our holiday cards it's quite a trip down memory lane.

It's not the most exciting of traditions, but this is what I have to offer and it's a good one to me.

Family

Group photo by Teckelcar

One of the great things about Bar Mitzvahs is the bringing together of family. People that you only get to see maybe once a year make the effort to put into an appearance. It's a happy occasion, full of food and happiness.

Sadly a few people couldn't make it this time, but in three years I expect to see them all for the dynamic duo's B'nai Mitzvah.

Where I Was Last Week

Rebecca by Teckelcar
Rebecca, a photo by Teckelcar on Flickr.
Normally we do just one big trip in the summer and that had happened last month.

But this year we decided to mix it up a bit.

Since our trip up north was on the short side due to various commitments and we had such a good time this past spring at Shenandoah River State Park we thought we would give another state park a try. We looked up various parks in the state and settled on Bear Creek Lake. We could swim, fish and canoe! And as an added bonus, the park is about an hour out of Richmond.

Which turned out to be a very good thing since on TLinkhursday I had to drive Jake back for an evening marching band rehearsal.

The cabin was pretty much the same as the one we stayed in last spring, right on down to the wilderness themed upholstery on the furniture. Larry had the brilliant idea that since there was no dishwasher, everyone should wash their own plates, glasses, and silverware. That certainly made my life easier!

As for the park, the lake was a bit smaller than we envisioned. However, that didn't stop us from using the canoe on a daily basis. Nate brought his best friend along and the older boys would frequently take the canoe out and try to do a bit of fishing. They lost quite a few lures, but after switching to live bait Nate was able to snag a crappie.

Max and Rebecca didn't do much in the way of fishing. Instead they had fun at the small swimming area/ beach on the other side of the lake. Rebecca even joined me in swimming across the lake. Actually it was more kick-boarding since she is not a strong swimmer. That little adventure was a great deal of fun even though we got admonished by a park employee for 1.) swimming outside of the swimming area and 2.) swimming when the lifeguard was no longer present. We survived and were allowed to return to our side of the lake.

We all had a great time and look forward to our next state park adventure. If you click on the picture of Rebecca silhouetted by the morning light it will lead you to my Flickr account where there is a whole slew of picture in the Bear Creek Lake photo set.

Beef Festival!

Smile by Teckelcar
Smile, a photo by Teckelcar on Flickr.
This past weekend was the 32nd annual Amelia Beef Festival. We don't go every year, it is rather pricey, but when we do we always have a good time.

I realized accidentally that last Saturday was the day when I was watching a local morning show last week. I don't normally watch, but our friends The Velvet Marias were the featured musical guest. As I waited for their segment to come up I impatiently watched various local bits that did not interest me, until the organizers to The Amelia Beef Fest appeared to promote their event. I thought it was come and gone and was delighted to see I was wrong.

Larry was out of town with Jake and I was trying to come up with a fun activity for the rest us and this filled the bill. One quick phone call to Meryl to see if she was in and we were all set, all I had to do was get the tickets before Saturday. The event is advance sales only and I did not want to miss out. I was really looking forward to the all you can eat ribs, BBQ, steamship round, and roasted corn.

Friday afternoon I got the tickets with only a slight bit of drama. After I left the bank (yes, really I got the tickets at a bank) I decided to double check how many tickets I got. As I sat in my car I discovered I had 6, not 5 tickets. After a few more errands I swung by the bank to drop off the extra ticket. They thanked me for my honesty and I thought nothing of it.

That is until the next day when I got a call from the bank to confirm that I had the right number of tickets. I did and even counted them again when I was on the phone.

As for the festival, we had a great time.

It rained, which it always seems to do, but we came prepared. I have a sun tent that keeps off most of the rain (it gets drippy underneath during downpours) and Rebecca looks very pleased that we brought our shelter. Nate got a bit bored until he started playing football with some passing boys. And Max, well he loved the roasted corn. We set up near the corn shed and I don't know how many times the boy ducked over for another ear. I enjoyed all of the beef and I too ate a boatload of the sweet, sweet roasted corn.

Sofia Sleeps

Just one more of my little niece fast asleep on the couch.

I love how toddlers will just nod off anywhere once you get them to stop moving. She looks so peaceful laying there, yet I know she had been very busy just a few minutes earlier.

I loved the colors surrounding her and the quality of light. The moment was just begging to be photographed and I was happy to oblige.

Grandmother and Granddaughter

Of all the photos I took on vacation I think this one, by a large margin, was the most important.

I didn't even think of taking a picture of my mother with her latest grandchild until I saw the two of them together. I had my camera on hand and quickly took a couple before Sofia wiggled out of her grandmother's lap and was off doing important toddler things.

It's a wonderful portrait of the two of them together. They both look relaxed and happy to be with each other. Sofia has the cutest little smile that her hand can't obscure and my mother has Sofia nestled in the crook of her arm.

I'm so glad we were able to visit at the same time as my brother's family (I wonder when I'll get used to saying my brother's family!) at our mother's home. It was a delightful visit and I wished we could have all stayed longer.

Nana's Wading Pool

wading pool by Teckelcar
wading pool, a photo by Teckelcar on Flickr.
A few years ago we bought this rather silly Spongebob themed wading pool. It's at my mother's house and every summer we drag it out. It has held up fairly, though it seems to have a bit of a leak now and doesn't hold water for very long. However, it still provides hours of entertainment.

Even Sofia thought the pool was fun and loved standing next to it, occasionally reaching down to splash her hand in the water. None of the kids spent much time in the pool (it was only low 80s), instead the pool was viewed as a great place to refill water guns. You can see Nate in the picture with a big smile plastered across his face as he cradles his water blaster.

That rather silly pool turned out to be a good investment.

Sofia!

Sofia by Teckelcar
Sofia, a photo by Teckelcar on Flickr.
Why hello there!

I'm back after a week and a half long jaunt up North to met this little person, Miss Sofia.

Well we did a bit more than just met my little niece, but her visit out East with her parents did determine when we went up North. My brother and his wife had been invited to a wedding in VT and planned on staying with my, or rather our mother at her home that was just an hour's drive from the wedding venue. Which was very exciting for us since my brother and his little family live waaaay far away in Alaska.

Visiting them is no easy car ride.

So we much planning and phone calling back and forth between Vermont, Virginia, and Alaska we coordinated our vacation schedules to overlap.

cousins by Teckelcar

And what a vacation it was.

Sofia is a delightful little girl, all of fifteen months. It would have been nice to have met her when she was still a babe in arms, but she is far more fun as a full fledged toddler. She is all peaches and cream with big smiles. Sofia delighted in her big cousins and they too were smitten with her. She loved running around the backyard with them, kicking a ball, and splashing in the wading pool.

We even got to babysit her when her parents went out for the rehearsal dinner. Sofia didn't mind one bit to be left with us. All I had to do was take her out to the porch while my brother and sister-in-law left out the side door. The only time Sofia cried was for a brief moment when I put her to bed. Then she quickly dropped off to sleep. The next day it was off to the wedding and the the house seemed too quiet, they were spending the night and wouldn't be back until midday. Then it was out turn to leave and go back home.

Our visit was all too short.

I can't wait to see the newest addition to the the family again.

Grrr

Grrr by Teckelcar
Grrr, a photo by Teckelcar on Flickr.
Cooking vegetables for certain members of my family can be a rather thankless task. I try to be positive about the whole thing and only require that the picky eaters at the very least try just a small bite of everything on the dinner table.

But some days I feel like even the vegetable itself resents the anti- green things stance.

Another Day, Another Banquet

Tonight was number four in our end of school and end of sports banquet-a-thon. So far we have had two soccer banquets (one each for Max and Rebecca), a robotics potluck (Jake), and the big end of the year band banquet with awards (Jake again). Sunday will be Nate's lacrosse banquet and we should be done.

Theoretically there could be one for show choir, but we haven't heard a peep from the director and I'm not sure if the show choir band would be invited. Anyway, Jake has already had two and really doesn't need a third banquet. The five total we do have are far in a way plenty for us. There are so many potlucks I'm interested in attending. I can usually find something to eat, but it is a bit challenging for some of the pickier members of our family. Mind you they have all been fun, the kids have been with some particularly nice teams/ groups. Band in particular has a very warm, family like feel to it.

So one more to go and then we are done until the next round in the fall.

Been Fishin'

Been Fishin'
Originally uploaded by Teckelcar
Things have a bit lean here because last week was spring break and the start of Passover. We decided to take off to Shenandoah River State Park for a few nights and try a little fishing, a bit of hiking and exploring in Luray Caverns. We had hoped to do some rafting as well, but the Shenandoah river was still swollen and angry looking after the recent flooding. When the river is a bit friendlier we'll give the rafting another go.

Aside from the aborted rafting, we had a great time and were able to pretty much do as we planned. It wasn't the best conditions for fishing, but all the boys had a chance to learn how to cast (Rebecca made her own pole and stuck with that). Nate and Jake got a good idea on how to cast and were fairly enthusiastic. Next time we go out to fish they'll be ready to go.

It was a lovely break and we all had fun.

The End is Near

Or, Healed at Last

I took Jake in for the 5 week check up of his fractured foot. The doctor was pleased with Jake's progress. The x-ray showed clear evidence of bone growth around the fracture and Jake has been essentially pain free for the past few weeks.

So now Jake is being weaned off of his stinky Aircast, by next week he'll be back to sneakers and will kick that cast to the curb.

And as for the stinky part, good lord does it reek to high heaven.

The cast has gotten so bad that even Jake complains about the stench of death that emanates from the cast. Mind you he showers daily and has fairly good hygiene, but he's stuck with an unwashable object that he is supposed to wear 23 hours a day.

He'll be stretched out prone on the couch waving his feet in the air and I'll walk by and nearly gag from the stench. In fact Jake voluntarily sprays the interior with Febreeze on a daily bases. Yes, a 14 year old boy is actually using Febreeze. It doesn't kill the odor, but it does knock it back to a far more tolerable level.

We will all be happy when he is done with the cast. Jake wants to burn it, but I told him that would make it smell even worse.

My Veteran, My Father

To all of those who have served this country, I thank you.

My father served in WWII on a mine sweeper in the Pacific. This is one of the few photographs I have of him in uniform. He is on the front stoop with his Aunt and Uncle in his Navy uniform.

He looks so young, he had just turned 26 years old if it's the later part of March. And this was years before he even met my mother.

So once again thank you for all your sacrifices in keeping this nation safe and free.
