Today we got our first snowfall of the season. It didn't stick and it didn't last for very long, but we did get a sustained snow flurry for about an hour.
I was on the phone with my husband when I glanced out the window are saw the first flakes come down. I blurted out with unrestrained glee "It's SNOWING!" Then proceeded to do a happy dance. Hopefully I didn't damage his hearing, I think not since he did sound genuinely happy for me. I'm a northern girl at heart and the first snowfall is always my favorite.
I know winter won't officially start for quite some time, but I'm ready for it. Our home has a new roof plus skylights and autumn has reached that dreary stage when everything seems dead. The lone holdout is my parsley, which still retains its vibrant shade of green. The weather is cold and our dogs have the right idea of getting all cozy under their blankets.

15 Years of Excitement
This is Nate from well over a decade ago and he is still the same silly boy that is almost always in motion. He is almost my height now, it looks like he is just 2 inches shorter than me. that difference, however is not going to last. I swear he has grown a few inches in the past few weeks.
As for his birthday, he didn't get the day off even though it is Veterans' Day. He did, however, get to have a couple of his favorite foods. His request for his birthday treat was cinnamon rolls. He is not a big fan of cake, coffee cake is more his speed.
He was willing to have me buy him a coffee cake, but I wouldn't hear of it. Dang it, I have made them before and I can certainly make them for my son's birthday. It just meant I had to have them all set to go in the oven before I went to bed and set the oven's time to preheat it so I could pop the rolls in a 5:30 am.
Nate was very pleased with his birthday treat and I think the smell of the cinnamon rolls made everyone wake up a little easier this morning.

Clarity
We have had some big doings over here. As of today we officially have a new roof on our home. For the past three and a half days there has been a crew of guys ripping off the old, starting to leak shingles and replacing with lovely new ones. It's been very loud and I have been blocked from our garage and driveway from the assorted roofing materials and truck filling up the driveway. Plus there is the added joy of schlepping across the front yard to get to our vehicles.
I know, first world problems. However, I did have to drag a 40 bag of dog kibble across the lawn to replace the empty one.
Anyway, part of the whole re-roofing was the replacement of our seven (!) skylight, one in each of the upstairs bathrooms and the remaining five in the ceiling above the rear portion of the house. The top picture is on of the downstairs skylights with the old window. It's almost opaque, there is no view and the light is fairly dim.
Here is the adjacent skylight with the new crystal clear window.
I was shocked by the difference. I knew the previous skylights were not particularly good, but I didn't know how bad they were until now.
My eyes are continuously drawn to the new view. I just can't get over how much better the new skylights are. And the improvements don't stop there, the windows are far more energy efficient. The glass is insulated and sealed which could potentially lead to lower fuel bills in the winter and the summer.
In the meantime I'm going to enjoy the new view.

Done
I voted today, sometime around 10:30 am. I like to avoid the morning rush, but still have the rest of my day. After I fed my ballot into the scanner I found out I was voter # 819 for my district, a pretty good turnout for fairly early in the day. The best part was as I walked out of polling place with the knowledge I was done with this very ugly election cycle. The two major candidates were awful, as I explained to a friend it was as though the barrel was emptied. And they were scraped out from the bottom. In fact The Richmond Times Dispatch refused to endorse any of the candidates, a pretty shocking state of affairs.
I'm just glad it's over along with all the political phone calls that have been tying up our phones.

Handspring Puppet Co
Saturday I got to see the stage version of War Horse courtesy of Meryl. I wanted to see the movie, but missed it so I was thrilled when Meryl invited me to go with her. I knew going in that puppets were used instead of horses and I had a vague idea of what they looked like, however I was blow away by the creations in action. The construction and the manipulation of the puppets resulted in a very life like horse. The mannerisms and movement are spot on.
I found this video about the manufacture, Handspring Puppet Co. Based in Cape Town South Africa, they build the puppets almost entirely by hand.

Meimei
Meryl has gotten a new kitten and I have had the pleasure of being amongst the first to meet her.She a former feral and is a bit skittish, but Meimei is warming up to me.
She has a gloriously loud purr, I call it thunder purr. I can clearly hear her when I'm playing with her with the laser pointer. It is so much fun watching her zoom about with such obvious joy.
And a bit of joy is always something to be appreciated.

Friday Night Lights
For the first time ever I went to a high school football game. Though in reality I was just there for the band.
it's Jacob's senior year and I realized that if I was ever going to go to a game I should get off my duff and actually go to one. It was the penultimate regular season game with nothing particularly special about it. My in-laws were in town and we decided it would be fun to go to the game. We would watch the first half of the game, the band's halftime show, and then head on back home.
It was a beautiful night for football, the weather mild with the rain holding off until after halftime and even then it was just a fine mist. I had fun chatting with Larry's mom and not watching the game (It was expected to be a rout and our high school did not disappoint, only one touch down by the visitors). I alsogot a kick out of the warm reception I got from the band members as I walked past. They are a nice bunch of kids and I'm glad my son is one of their number.

Happy Halloween
and "It's Alive!"
Since I already showed you Rebecca's costume, here is Max. He wanted to be Dr. Horrible this year so I ordered a child-sized lab coat and had Max look for Jacob's old safety glasses. With his maniacal laughter and messy blond hair, Max pretty much nailed it.
As for the pumpkin portion of the evening, I held it down to just six this year. The pumpkins were outrageously expensive and never had the price drop like previous years. I did, however, get a spontaneous discount at the checkout. The cashier knew they were selling two different sizes of pumpkins, the $8 jumbo and the $5. She didn't feel like sorting through my mess and sold the whole lot at the $5 price with statement that the "The store needs to sell these off."
Sweet.
So anyhoodle, click on this link and it will take you to my 2013 Halloween photo set.

First Frost
This weekend we had our first frost and it was a killing one for the tomato plants and the basil. Which, considering how weedy they all looked, was not a bit surprising. The parsley, on the other hand, shook off the cold weather and is as green and vibrant as ever.
Interestingly the second of our two black swallowtail caterpillars has yet to form a chrysalis/pupa and I thought it was a goner from the cold. It warmed up enough today that the caterpillar was once again moving, just very slowly. I wonder if it will ever move on to the next stage or did it wait too long.

Little Witch
This weekend Rebecca was invited to attend a "Trunk or Treat" with a friend in the neighborhood. It was a first time for anybody in our family. I've been aware of such things for years, but never bothered since our kids got plenty of candy in our neighborhood.
I don't know when Rebecca got invited, but the first I heard of it was Friday afternoon right before we headed out for services. Rebecca did apologize for the late noticed and then wanted to know if she could get a new costume.
Ah... no.
She had one from last year that still fit and since this was most likely her last year I wasn't willing to spring for a new one. Plus add in a busy day Saturday, there wasn't any time. She would have to make do with an old costume or cobble one together with all the stuff we already have.
And this is what she put together: a feathery witches hat she picked up for a couple of dollars last year, a long dress, a cape we had knocking about, a decorative broom (the lone survivor when I made a Harry Potter brooms for all four), a stuffed cat as her familiar in her candy bucket, silver shoes a la Wizard of Oz, and my stripey witch socks. I think it came out rather well and as a finishing touch I painted her finger nails dark (almost black) blue.
Rebecca was very pleased and had a devilishly good time.

Just 19 Days Later
I can't believe a mere 19 days ago I was at he beach and happily frolicking in the waves. It was a perfect day for the beach and we were able to go out and enjoy the last day of summer weather.
Now it is sock weather and I'm wearing a sweater as I write this post. I can't imagine willingly stepping into the ocean now. Yesterday the upstairs' heating system kicked on for the first time with the annual burning off of the dust on the heater coil and thus setting off the smoke detectors. The summer weather is clearly over here in central Virginia.

Semi-Dress Rehearsal
Today was the last rehearsal before the big high school marching band state assessment. The band director had the kids wear hats, gloves, and marching shoes for this last run through. Parents were invited to attend to give it more of a feel as a performance than just another afternoon marching around in the parking lot.
The band has come a long way since the preview show I got to see way back in August. They know the music and their marks, hopefully it will a bit warmer Saturday than the 55 degrees today. I wish I could see them, but alas with two soccer games and a lacrosse game, I have to be home shuttling kids with larry.

Chrysalis
Not so long ago I shared a picture of a black swallowtail caterpillar in my parsley. Another one showed up the next day and I have been keeping tabs on them for the past week and a half. One of them went missing and I discovered what happened to it. According to this site, the chrysalis resembles a stick and I must agree. It blended in so well with the tomato stake I had in the pot that I almost missed it.
Supposedly it will emerge as a butterfly in about ten days, unless it is in diapause. If it is in diapause, it will over winter in the chrysalis form and emerge in springtime. With the brisk weather we have had the past few days, my money is on spring. I'll try to protect it until then.

Raspberry Drop
Last week Jacob was having a little late nigt snack of raspberries when he noticed the water drop on top of the one he was about to eat. He marveled at how the surface tension of the water held it in domed shape. Thenhe showed me the berry with it's water drop and asked me to take a picture.
I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. II took three shots and this one (the third) was the best. I used the microwave's door as a backdrop, I knew the black surface would show off the droplet perfectly. A little tweaking of the color and crop that tightened up the photo was all that I did.

Happy 12th Birthday to Rebecca and Max
Today marked the 12th birthday of my favorite set of Twins. They didn't get to go to the beach today, but they did not so long ago. We had just the two of them and they had a great time. They did separate things, building sand castles for Max and goofing off in the waves for Rebecca, and came together to bury each other in the sand. It'd max's turn here and a short while later Rebecca was buried by Max.
It's nice to see them play so well together. They bicker and argue, but that's what siblings do. The main thing is that deep down they do care for each other and get along fairly well. They are separate individuals and they make that clear on a regular basis.
Take for instance their birthday treats. We have a long standing tradition that on your birthday you get some sort of treat for breakfast. It can be cookies, cake, what ever you want within reason. Max was easy to guess, he loves pumpkin pie and that's all I needed to know.
Rebecca was a bit trickier. I knew chocolate would be involved, but what form? She spent a day mulling it over and came back to me with a request for a chocolate eclair pie.
Ooo a new challenge!
I spent some time searching, it was hard because most recipes call for instant vanilla pudding and graham crackers. Which, for me, is a big no. I knew there had to be at least one from scratch recipe and after some careful searching I found it over at Food.com, Delicious Chocolate Eclair Pie.
It was pretty easy to make, just time consuming. I got a little taste of it while assembling and it is well worth the extra time, it tastes just lke an eclair.
unfortunately it wasn't quite what Rebecca wanted. The dessert she had in mind was more of a double crusted custard pie with chocolate drizzled on top. She at first rejected it, but after a bit of pressure from to at least try it before condemning it, she gave it a shot. Turns out she liked the pie despite it not being quite right.

Suburban Deer
Friday I stepped out on the deck and saw our deer were out in the backyard. I say our deer because this is the family grouping we regularly see, a couple of does with their fawns and, most recently, a buck or two. And amazingly enough the deer did not spook, nor did the dogs wake up. I was able to slide back inside and grab my camera.
I was able to spend a good chunk of time taking pictures and moving about on the deck. The trick was to move slowly and quietly and have the camera on quite mode.
A quick aside here, the quite mode is my default. I really dislike all the bloops. beeps, and bleats digital cameras make. All I want to the simple sound of the shutter release and nothing more.
Anyhoodle, we have a lot of deer. I still think they are beautiful, but they are a nuisance. We can't have much in the way of flowering plants, they are a road hazard in the neighborhood, and they drive the dogs crazy. At this point I call them the tall rats. Even when they nicely line up for a group photo. Well except for the little guy, but kids are like that.

Handsome Fellow
Rebecca announced today that there was another large caterpillar out on the deck. This one, however, wasn't as large or as gross as the previous denizen of our deck garden and was in the parsley, not the tomatoes.
Intrigued, I grabbed my camera and followed Rebecca out to the deck. It took her a moment, but she was able to find the caterpillar in question.
About an inch and a half long, it was a substantial sized critter. After a little bit of research I found out that it is the caterpillar form of the Black Swallowtail butterfly. Interestingly enough it is also known as the parsley worm and that is exactly where Rebecca found it.
I hope it survives the upcoming winter because it's a bit late for butterflies around here and this is one of my favorites.

Artist of the Week: Even More Sand
A very cheerful and wet Max is the Artist of the week.
I was only able to get this picture of him not building a sand castle by snagging him while he was tearing about. As you can see he was more than happy to oblige me and my camera, then he was off running about, in and out of the water. He and his brother Nate are both studies in motion. they need to go, go. go and get very fidgety when forced to keep still. Mind you if they are involved in a book or a project they can settle right down, but if their mind isn't engaged they can not throttle down the activity levels.
Case in point, when we went to the beach on Sunday Max spent most of his time building his sand castle/city. He was very upfront bout his plans when we were packing to go, I had him pick out which boogie board he would like to take. He pointed at one and said he didn't really need it since he was planning on building in the sand and would not be using the board very much.
And that was exactly what went down. He spend a brief time in the water, but most of his time was spent digging, shaping, and moving sand. Max is very passionate about his sand creations and will happily spend hours mucking about on a beach.
And passion is what you need to create art.

Last Bit of Summer
Sunday we took advantage of the return of summer weather by going to the beach, specifically Virginia Beach's Little Island Park. A sweet gem of a beach that is south of all the bustle and lights of Virginia Beach proper.
I found out it's existence when taking Rebecca to her soccer game over in Chesapeake. Since we were so close to the ocean I thought it would be nice to go to the beach after her game. I did a little searching online the night before and found Little Island Park. Sadly she had too much homework, so we headed straight home, but I took note of the beach for a possible future trip. Larry liked the idea and we looked at our calendar for an open date. The earliest we could go turned out to be Oct. 6th.
The weather cooled and it looked a bit doubtful, but as luck would have it summer came back. The warm weather was forecasted to extend to Sunday, so we made our plans and told the kids on Saturday. Jacob begged off, he had plans with friends. This was no surprise as he is not a huge fan of the whole beach thing. Nate too wanted to stay home, he had homework to finish. We almost lost Max and Rebecca, but we convinced them to go. It was going to be a nice trip for just the four of us.
And it was a perfect day to go to the beach. It was warm with a good breeze, the beach wasn't crowded, and best of all the ocean was a lovely temperature to swim in. Around here October is a wonderful time to go to the beach. It's off season so the traffic and parking issues of high summer are nonexistent. Yet the ocean is still warm and you can still get the odd hot spell that makes it all perfect.

The Last Farm
A beautiful Icelandic short film about an old man, Hrafn, who has one last chore on the farm he shares with his wife Gróa before their daughter, Lilja, takes them to their retirement home in the city. Hrafn's one request is that Lilja should only come after the weekend.
A very well done film that is worth watching to the end.

Long Shadows
At soccer practice the shadows are getting longer and longer. In the not so distant future it'll be dark during practice and we will have the annual mad scramble for a lighted field.
Currently all of Max's regular practices are held in the back field that is not lit. Meanwhile two thirds of Rebecca's practice times are at the big, fully lit artificial turf complex that I like to call fake grassland. Max's practices will clearly have to be moved. The season is drawing to a close, but they will still need field time. As for Rebecca's team, they might curtail or eliminate the third session. It'll be interesting to see how it all works out.

Artist of the Week: Repetition
This week's artist is Rebecca with a couple of pieces from school.
The picture here is from a game a few weeks ago. The girls tried hard, but were outclassed by the other team and there were some decidedly odd calls. You know it is not good when the ball goes out and both teams wait for the referee to decide you gets the ball. Any way, I saw some good plays by our team and it was a worthwhile experience.
Which brings us to the art. Both pieces are a study in geometrical symmetries made with interlocking patterns. I immeadetly thought of some of the works by MC Escher when Rebecca pulled these out of her backpack.
The top one is composed of owls, with the owls alternating between light and dark. It is interesting to note (at least for me) that patch of feathers on the breast appear to alternate in color as well. In reality it is an illusion created by the changing body color.
Next in line is composed of some very surprised foxes. The pattern is smaller than the aforementioned owls and as a result she got far more foxes on the page. I find the large eyes of the foxes to be a bit more intense than the owl page. That said I like both pieces. There is a sort of fun air about them and i think she did a lovely job.

The Girl Loves Her Bon-bon
This is Rebecca with her beloved Bon-bon. Primarily Bon-bon stays upstairs in Rebecca's room, but once in a while Rebecca totes this rather overlarge stuffed animal downstairs.
For a very long time Rebecca has wanted a super-sized stuffed animal. I wasn't interested in getting her one because 1) she already has a ridiculous amount of stuffed animals and 2) the over-sized stuffies have the prices to match. So we have been at a stalemate.
Enter Costco.
During one of my weekly Costco runs Rebecca tagged along and it just so happened that they had a whole selection of over-sized stuffed dogs for sale. Rebecca was smitten and when she saw the price was merely $20, she asked if she could get one. I said yes she could, BUT she had to pay for it. This resulted in mad calculations on her part on exactly how much cash and how much allowanced money she had banked. She was a bit short, but would soon earn the difference. We settled on her coming back once she had the money and she could pick out her stuffie.
A couple of weeks passed and Rebecca had her money. We had a brief scare at the store when we could not find the stuffed dogs. It was very possible that they were sold out and that would be a crushing blow for the both of us. Rebecca wouldn't get her hard earned toy and I would come off as a big meany for sticking to my guns about not advancing the money. Fortunately the toys had been simply relocated and there was still plenty to choose from. She spent a long time looking over the toys and settled on the dark brown version. All that was left was purchasing this over large toy and bring it home.
As for the name, I suggested it to Rebecca. She loved the idea of her enormous chocolate brown dog being named after a tiny chocolate covered treat.

Sunday Rainbow
As I stepped out the deck to harvest some basil and parsley from my little garden pots for dinner I saw the most brilliant rainbow. The picture does not do it justice. I could clearly see each band of color arching over the trees directly behind our home.
A light rain was falling, the first in seeming in weeks. We are having a bit of a dry spell after such a wet summer. I never did turn our sprinkler system and at this point I'm not going to bother. That said, I do have to water my little deck garden. The plants have mostly bolted and look for the most part spent. I'm just going to nurse them along until the first frost , which is still some time away.
However I won't begrudge to time spent on them. I love having fresh basil. parsley, and the occasional tomato just steps away from the back door. Plus sometimes I get to see a pretty rainbow when I go out to my garden.

Rebel
I like mowing the lawn. I end up doing the mowing since I'm able to during the week, resulting in one less thing during the weekend.
The worst part of the job is the push mower, which is used on the steep embankment alongside the road and tricky bits that are too awkward for the tractor. It's fortunately not a huge amount and I can get it done in under an hour. I prefer to get that part out of the way first, leaving the riding mower as a sort of reward for a hard job.
The tractor we have is an old beast, at least a 14 years old. We got it in Pennsylvania before Nate was born. Amusingly enough it was from a hardware store that also catered to the local Amish population. Horse and buggies tied to the provided fence were a common sight.
Anyhoo, it's a good tractor that does a great job. I view my time onboard as my thinking time. Free from distractions: it's just me, the tractor and the lawn. I get a real sense of accomplishment when the whole lawn is done. A beautiful green and even sward of grass greets my eyes after I tuck the mowers away in the shed.
So you can imagine how irksome this single blade of grass can be. It somehow evaded the mower blade and defiantly sticks out from the rest of the grass. When I find these rebel blades I go back and deal with them individually.

Under the Weather
Most of us have been sick the past few days.I think Jacob was first with a runny nose and cough. Max felt off last Friday and I ended up picking him up early from school. I succumbed over the weekend and just now I'm able to have coherent thoughts, hence the "Chicken!" post on Sunday. Rebecca only made it partway through school today and I had to go fetch her. Meanwhile Nate has been off school the past two days, which means I've gotten to hear the automated phone system from the high school butcher his name twice.
As for the picture, it is from this year's county fair. It was an incredibly rainy day and I asked Max if I could take his picture as we waited for Aunt Meryl. Don't let the expression fool you, Max had a great time getting all wet. The expression was all his idea.

Chicken!
I've been sick pretty much all weekend. I was able to struggle out Saturday morning to do the soccer mom thing, however once home I went to bed for the rest of the day. I'm feeling better now, but totally uninspired.
Thus I have here a cute chicken from the county fair as today's post.

Snappy
I was at the library this week and as I stepped outside I looked up at the flag out front. The sky, as you can see, was a clear brilliant blue. A good breeze was blowing so the flag was snapping in the wind. The flag pole is quite close to the entrance and you have to really crane your neck to see the flag. I liked the perspective and the colors so much I deemed it worthy to go to the car for my camera and to come back and take a few pictures.
I don't know what is so pleasing to me about this picture. I can tell you that it is true to what I saw and the picture is straight out of the camera. No cropping, no color adjustment, no editing whatsoever. Not bad for a little point and shoot i got for $50.

Ahoy There!
It be Talk Like a pirate Day!
I charted a course to the Krispy Kreme and, along with my first mate Meryl, captured the treasure, a dozen glazed doughnuts. We divided our plunder and I sailed on for further adventuring.
It twas time to pick up a member of my scurvy crew, Nate, and his chum. They had to speak proper like 'fore entering the ship, but the promise of doughnut treasure loosened their tongues. Them thar be the rules, speak as a pirate and ye get yer share.
Then we pushed on, made our home port after Nate's chum abandoned ship at his port o'call. I had one more voyage to make, another member of our bonny crew had to meet with his mates and their captain. I stood watch with a dagger in my boot until 6 bells.
It be a good day to be a pirate.

Artist of the Week: Apples
This week's artist is Nate with a piece of art from the previous school year and a self portrait for his picture.
I just found the selfie, along with a few others, on my camera. He had shown me one of the pictures a few days ago, in it his eyes were closed and he said it looked like a picture of him sleeping. I figured he would delete the pictures since he is normally an elusive subject. I put it out of my mind and pretty much forgot about it until yesterday when I was uploading pictures from my camera. So color me surprised, I have actual picture of the boy that wasn't the result of my sneaking up on him.
As for the art, he brought it home at the end of the year and I put it in the dreaded "safe place" and forgot all about it. I was clearing stuff away and rediscovered it. Nate saw me taking a picture and told me he remembered it and really liked the piece.
It is a simple study of an apple done in contrasting colors, both in the actual drawing and the background paper. Nate did a great job capturing the roundness of the apples. He made good use of color and the strokes of the crayon. This one may even be worthy of framing, I'll have to see if I can find a ready made frame for a reasonable price.

Big Numbers
Last Friday the van hit the 200k mile mark. The same van that I just fixed so it would pass inspection. Yes the check engine light is on, but really it would be more surprising if it wasn't. As my mechanics observed vehicles like this are not known for lasting this long.
The big event itself happened while I was driving back from the Kol Nidre service. I glanced at the odometer and let out a big whoop. Nate, who was riding shotgun, said we should take a picture so I told him to use my phone. The resulting picture is a bit blurred, but it is legible.
As for the timing of the picture, Nate gave me the following explanation. He wanted the number to be 200,013 since it was Friday the 13th and the year is 2013.

Still Morning
I'm starting to feel hints of fall, The mornings are chill and it takes a while for the day to warm up. Leaves are starting to show hints of red and orange. And the sun is slowly sliding lower on the horizon, changing the quality of light, No longer the harsh, flat blaze of summer light, there is a softer feel to daylight.

Tiny Lizard
Jacob spotted this little guy the other day. To give a bit of scale, that is a nailhead on the left.
I have only briefly seen this particular species (Eastern Fence Lizard) before, most likely due to its diminutive size. I'm used to seeing the five lined skinks, particularly in the juvenile form with the electric blue tail. This little guy is not nearly as showy with its grey scaly skin.
However it is very cute

A Dozen years Ago
I had a quiet day today, which is appropriate for patriot's day. I didn't go out except to drop off Nate for his morning car pool to school and to collect Jacob from his after school marching band rehearsal. So I have no new pictures for today. But I did find this rather somber one I took last yer around Veterans' Day at the Virginia War memorial.
I did have one interesting moment this weekend concerning Sept. 11th. Rebecca was working on a school project, a sort of brochure all about her. She had to detail two experiences the affected her life.I was going to suggest September 11th when it hit me, she was born after that fateful day. It has always been a part of her life.
Somehow it really hit home for me how long ago it was. I have this lovely, smart, and vivacious creature that has never known before, only after. She is in middle school and is getting taller by the minute. It really knocked me back for a minute.
A dozen years, more than a lifetime yet it seems not so long ago.

And I Repair Cars
Last week I brought the van in for new tires. One tree was shot to heck and I was driving around on the spare. I had a sneaking suspicion that at least one other tree needed replacing and had the shop check them all out.
I was right and in reality all needed replacing and after the *ahem* slightly overdue inspection it turned out I had a burnt out reverse signal light and the third tail light was so dim it was effectively nonfunctional. Thus my van earned a big old reject sticker. Since my van is rather geriatric, 9 1/2 years to be precise, and a discontinued mode my mechanics didn't have the tail light on hand. They told me I had 15 days to correct the problems and maybe I should look around for a tail light in a junkyard. It is a complicated part and it would be silly to spend a lot on such an old vehicle.
After a bit of research I discovered exactly how complicated the part is, in order to replace the third light I would also have to replace the windshield wiper motor. Yes,that's right, the Ford motor company in all its wisdom combined the tail light and the rear wiper motor. The above picture shows the entire part. Every mechanic I've talked to this past week has shook their head and said that's crazy.
Unfortunately I could not find a used one, this was after two junkyards and a dealer in salvaged auto-parts. So I was stuck going to the dealership and ordering from them, note the parts department thought the combo was crazy as well. Today the part came in and I was able to successfully install the new wiper motor and tail light. Toss in a new reverse light buld and I was good to go for inspection.
It's nice to have a vehicle without a rejection sticker.

Well Hello There
Yesterday I was breathlessly informed by some of my children that there was an absolutely enormous caterpillar om one of our tomato plants. This warranted further investigation. I had my suspicions on what they found, so a quick trip outside was in order.
They were not exaggerating, it was huge, possibly the biggest hornworm I have ever seen.
In my previous life I was a lab tech, one of the labs I worked in had tobacco hornworms. From what I learned we had a tomato hornworm, which is very similar to the tobacco. Both will feed on tomato plants, so it's no guarantee that you have tomato hornworm on a tomato plant. I also learned that these were the critters that had been eating the odd tomato. I had blamed the squirrels, but now I know better.

Picture of the Week: Round Up
I had no real expectations when I took this photo. I had my little point and shoot camera with me and got some decent shots, I was able to get the timing right so that Meryl was clearly visible. I pulled out my cell phone so I could do a quick upload onto Facebook.
All I took was one picture with my phone and I was amazed with the result. I wasn't expecting much so I was blown away by the clarity of the picture. The picture is straight out of the phone. No cropping, no adjusting of light levels, nor color enhancing. It was uploaded straight from the phone to Flickr. The blur on the Round Up is perfect. Motion is indicated, but the static features are clearly captured.

Artist of the Week: Soccer Tourney
This week's artist, or rather artists are Max and Rebecca.
I took this picture of them at the county fair. It was far less than ideal weather, what with the periodic downpours', and yet that made it all the better. There were no lines and for once it didn't feel like we were on the surface of the sun. They both had a wonderful time and were even willing to go on the rides together.
This past weekend they also spent some time together. Both of their soccer teams were entered in a tournament over in Williamsburg. We headed over on Saturday and were on the soccer pitch bright and early for their first games. Rebecca's team had another game shortly after and in the short time between their second games , I scooted over to the hotel we were staying at to check in. When we came back after Max's game we relaxed in the hotel. Rebecca hung out with her teammates and Max spent time with his teammate that was staying with us (he's a great kid and is Max's best friend. His mom was stretched mighty thin last weekend and I offered to take him in. At this point in the tourney both teams had one loss and one win. putting Max's team second place in its bracket.
On Sunday Rebecca had two scheduled games (for the girl's team it was round-robin affair) while Max's team had made it to the semi-finals, if the boys' win, then they would play in the finals. Unfortunately it was not to be and they lost. However it was not too shabby for a team that up until Saturday had yet to of played a game together. As for Rebecca's team, they hung in there and played some very tough competition to a tie and lost to the team that completely dominated the game. Both Max and Rebecca conked out in the car during the ride back home. It was an exhausting weekend.

First Day of Middle School
Today I can really and truly say I have no more elementary school aged children. After 12 (!) years of having at least one, and for a few years three, in elementary school I'm done.
I guess it is a little bit sad, but I'm so done with it all. Don't get me wrong, I love our school. We had wonderful teachers and the staff was terrific, particularly with Max. However I'm so glad to be closing that chapter in our lives.
As for my middle-schoolers, they were nervous, but excited. Their seemly sad expressions are more about the much earlier bus schedule and the far longer walk to the bus stop.
Oh and silly mom having to take yet another picture.

Back In The Saddle Again
The last part of summer just about wiped me out. Two soccer tournaments, a big shindig in honor of our Rabbi, and the general chaos of back to school. Add in a new computer and all that entails and my little corner of the internet was sadly neglected. But now that the school year starts I'm back in the saddle again.
