Or random kid art.
A few weeks ago Max brought home a notice that a piece of his art was on display in the school district's main administration building. It was to remain on display until June 4th. After visiting the wrong building I finally got my act together and found the right place last Friday. I had Jacob along so he got to see the exhibit as well.
Right off the bat Jacob noticed something by Rebecca. Not the child I was expecting, but yay for the girl. As I meandered through the exhibit I found the area I thought I would find Max's piece. I was pretty sure it was a small sculpture and there it was, front and center with one of his best friend's work beside it.
Jacob trailed after me and as I was taking pictures he espied the picture I have included. We don't know the kid, but we agreed it was a great picture. It is very well done, great colors and a wonderful composition. I had to take a picture and share it with the internets. Good job M. I hope you keep on making such fun art.

Artist of the Week: Illuminated Dream
This week's artist is Max. I got this picture of him Monday, the day after our big snow storm. We got about 4 1/2 inches and it was all pretty much gone Tuesday afternoon. Tonight's rain pretty much guarantees that not a speck will be left Thursday.
Anyhoo I have learned to immediately send children outside after any sort of snowfall. Heck I even sent them out Sunday night at around 8:30. There was about 3 inches of perfect packing snow and it would have been a shame for them to miss and opportunity to play in good snow. They spent an hour in the yard having a terrific snowball fight and completely churning up all the snow on the ground. In the morning it was a bit crusty, but by midday the snow had softened up again. The battle was resumed, this time in the woods where the snow was in better condition. Everybody had wet boots, coats, and gloves by the time they were done. It was a big mess, but I'm glad we finally got winter. We had pretty much given up, so this was a nice surprise.
Now the art was not a surprise. It was a Sunday school project and I was there to help. The project was to create an illuminated text using tracing paper and a construction paper frame. I ended up doing the lettering for the prayer because Max was getting very frustrated. Hebrew is written (and read!) right to left and Max kept smearing the letters. After about four tries I offered to do the writing. The rest of the illustration is all Max's doing.
He created the abstract design and traced the figure of the dog from an example of medieval illuminated text that was put out for inspiration. Max decided that the dog was thinking about Israel and the torah as it ran across a field. I think it's an utterly charming creation and had fun working with Max.

MCP Project 12: Leap... Sort of
This picture from April 23, 2010 would have been a perfect choice for this month's MCP Project 12's alternate theme Leap (and not too bad for the primary Love). Sadly it's not from this month and is ineligible.

Not Moose and Squirrel
Moose and fish instead, with a little bit of artistry.
This past weekend I ended up at a student teacher art exhibition up at VCU. What I mean by student teacher, is that it was an exhibit for art created in the classrooms of the VCU students that are in the teaching program. The VCU student teachers are sent out to public schools in the metro Richmond area where they teach class along side the regular teachers to get hands on experience in the classroom. And they are not just limited to elementary school, they do the full range of elementary, middle and high school. Max and Rebecca's school was among the elementary schools that had participated and that was how I learned about the show.
It was a bit tricky finding the building and there was the added bonus of the door being locked, but it all got sorted out. The first that that I saw were these stunning cardboard sculptures. The moose was flanked by a dinosaur (the picture was very blurry and thus not featured here) on the left and a fish on the left. All three are rather large with the rather angry looking moose about 3 feet across.
I thought all three were wonderful and would have happily taken them home. They were made by small groups (I think three kids apiece) of high school students. They are made entirely out of cardboard with glue and are beautifully crafted. This is almost an early Artist of the Week. Which works for me since tomorrow is my birthday.

Picasso, Come And Gone
Today was the very last day you could see Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris at the only east coast exhibition of its seven city international tour. How a museum in a city the size of Richmond beat those in New York and Boston is a complete mystery to me, I'm just happy that I was able to go.
I have been mulling over a visit not long after the initial announcement. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is not at all far and it would be silly of me not to at least try to see this rather landmark exhibit. Then a few weeks ago, out of the blue, Jake mentioned to me he would like to see the Picasso exhibit. A week later Rebecca saw a billboard and asked if she could go see Picasso.
Having two children independently request to see the show got me moving. The hard part would be coordinating their schedules. On my own I would in all likelihood go midweek in the morning, but that would not be possible with two school age children in tow. Which left us with the weekends. With only two left I decided that the penultimate weekend would be the better choice.
So we settled on Mother's day, sometime in the afternoon. I was able to buy the tickets in advance, guaranteeing us admission for when we wanted to go. And it was a good thing I had bought the tickets in advance, because the ticket holders line was ridiculously long.
Rebecca was a bit bored at first, the works at the beginning of the exhibit had a very muted color palette and were rather drab. About halfway through Rebecca started to perk as the the canvases became more. Jake meanwhile, is very much like me and we both carefully examined each work.
I wish I could share images of the exhibit, but photography was expressly forbidden in the galleries. So instead I have pictures of "Large Leaping Hare" by Barry Flanagan, a sculpture that was a big hit with Jake and Rebecca. You can see them silhouetted in front of the big picture window by the Hare in the top photo. The middle picture shows some of the details in the gilded bronze statue.
As for the last picture...
Rebecca requested that I snap a photo of her being menaced by the huge beast.

Well That's Different
While tooling around the Far West End of Richmond I happened upon this rather... unique vehicle. Looking like something from either Vermont (aka the land that the hippies washed up on when the 60's retreated) or the more modern counter culture scene of Burning Man, it was decidedly out of place in the land of the Volvo.
The picture really doesn't do the van justice. It's hard to see, but if you look closely you can just make out the decoration top. Some sort of assortment or bare branches and/or small bush has been affixed to the top of the van. Very tinsel garlands and ornaments decorate the naked limbs. The overall effect is quite bizarre. I will grant, however, that the quality of the paint job is rather high. Much better than some of the patchwork paint jobs I see all the time.

Photographic Reality
For every nice photo of my kids I get a dozen or so of pictures like this.
I actually like this one. It captures that classic bunny ear pose that pretty much everybody has done at some point.
As for the sculpture (it is a multi-element work), it's Barbara Hepworth's "The Family of Man." And of course it's at Pepsico's Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Garden. For another picture of this sculpture and a few others check out Urban By Design Online.

Passage
We have had some utterly gorgeous weather lately.
On last Friday Jake, Rebecca, and I took a flight up to New York. The weather was stunning and Grandma took us to the Pepsico headquarters to tour the gardens. I already featured one sculpture here and I have a few more to share.
Today's work was created by Richard Erdman and is titled Passages. I love the stark contrast of the bright white stone against the cool lush green of the grass. Unlike most of the larger works that rest directly on the grass, It's set in a little isle on crushed white stone.
The sunlight was at just the right point in the sky so that the shadows weren't too distracting, instead they emphasize and define the shape of the sculpture. I usually gravitate towards more classical forms, but this one really grabbed me. Something about just made me happy. I would love to see it at different times of the year and see how it looks as the seasons change.

Refreshing
After flying to New York today, my inlaws took myself along with Jake and Rebecca (the rest are stuck at home with Daddy) to the Pepsi World headquarters.
Sounds less than exciting, right?
Wrong!
Turns out that PepsiCo has a gorgeous sculpture garden open to the public. From the NY Job Source I lift the following description:

I don't really care for the drink, but the garden was incredibly maintained with some truly spectacular pieces of art. If you ever have a spare hour or two on a sunny day and are in the area, go and visit.
Update: I neglected to credit the artist and give the title of the sculpture pictured above. It is "Girl with a Dolphin" by David Wynne.

A Little Bit of Art
The kids are all home on spring break this week. Yesterday they mucked around outside and watched tv. They rediscovered the excitement of mommy buying groceries and various errands. Today had a much more cultural bent.
Last weekend I had attended a concert with Jake on the University of Richmond campus. In order to reach the concert's venue we had to cut through the Modlin Center for the Arts. As we passed through the lovely building we noticed a small gallery tucked off to the side. The current exhibit is titled "Surface Tension: Pattern, Texture, and Rhythm in Art from the Collection" and featured some delightful works of art.
Jake and I quickly went through the gallery and decided it was definitely worth a second look when we had a bit more time. Sadly it was closed by the end of the concert, but would be open during spring break. I thought it would be a good field trip for my crew because it had the added bonus of a create your own work of art area.
So today I dragged my brood on over to the gallery. Max was a bit underwhelmed at first and promptly sprawled on the bench. He did, however, perk up when he found out he could make an art work at the end of our visit.
Rebecca and Jake were far more interested in looking at the art. Jake was happy to revisit the gallery and point out his favorites to his siblings. Rebecca drank in the art and carefully examined each piece. I love this picture and how it captures the moment.
Meanwhile Nate wandered about bored and uninterested in the whole enterprise. He was more more interested in the lacrosse practice happening just outside the building along side the parking lot. He made a half-hearted collage at the end while asking me when would we be going home.
Barring Nate, I think the rest of them had a good time. Max even announced this was his favorite museum.

Artist of the Week: Underwater and a Happy Birthday
I'm a day late, but you get a two for one special today.
Yesterday was Max and Rebecca's seventh birthday, plus it was time for Artist of the Week. Because of Yom Kippur I already skipped AOTW last week, so I really couldn't pass it by again.
As for being a day late, well all can say it was a combination of being tired, annoyed and suffering from technical difficulties. Mind you the technical difficulties were in fact self inflicted and resulted in my being very annoyed with myself.
We had gone out to dinner last night at our favorite local barbecue joint, Brock's. Max and Rebecca picked it out after I asked them what did they wanted for dinner. In our family not only do you get cake for breakfast (or cookies in this case) on your birthday, but you get to pick out what we get for dinner.
Larry had a board meeting at our synagogue, so he couldn't make it, but we did get Aunt Meryl in his stead. We had a lovely dinner, the food was good, the waitress was terrific and the atmosphere has a nice laid back family friendly feel. I had brought my camera in and promptly forgot all about it and left it behind when we left.
It wasn't until a few hours later I realized what I had done, but by then the place was locked up and nobody was in. So I had no camera, none of the pictures I had taken and I was just too peeved to doing anything else but finish the dishes and go to bed.
At least I was able to go to sleep because I knew I would get my camera back. We had shown up at the tail end of the evening and I personally knew our waitress. Her son also plays football for our school, he was just the next age level up from Nate. And I was right. This morning she called me back and we arranged for her to give Larry the camera at practice.
Anyhoo, I'm much happier today and here are our artists.
First up is little Miss Rebecca. The picture I took of her was at school during lunch time. I stopped by to give out cookies to both Max and Rebecca's classes in honor of the dynamic duo's birthday. I was extremely popular and discovered I knew quite a few first graders.
Rebecca got to wear the crown all day at school, which is very fitting for my little princess.
As for her art I have two of her latest creations. The first one is of a fisherman happily at sea doing his thing. A sea gull is diving into the water just behind him and an eel swims along amongst the fish.
In her second picture a mother dolphin is leaping out of the water with her tiny baby just below her. It's a bit hard to make out the little one, but it is there just to the right of the larger dolphin's splash. Another eel swims in the picture along with a variety of colorful fish and a lone jellyfish.
Both pictures are visually clean with a consistent compositional style. I love the bright colors and the attention to details without being too fussy. She was a clear style and is very confident artist.
Max is next up. I took that picture of him last month in our living room. The boxes that held our new organizational systems were very popular with the kids. Heck, even the dogs got in on the fun.
Max also has two pieces of art for this week's AOTW. His first picture features orcas, penguins and a seal. On the lower left corner he wrote "I Luv oroga!" (I love orcas!). He made this picture for show and tell. He wanted to bring in one of his plush killer whales and thught this picture, along with a book would add to his presentation.
When he first drew the picture The ocean was not all colored in. I was a bit dismayed when he scribbled in all the blue, but in the end it works. The graphically bold orca and penguins stand out in their bright blue surroundings. The leopard seal is still visible as it chases the penguins. The octopus/jelly fish things are the only ones to lose out. overall I like the final picture.
As for his second picture, it is a fisherman in a boat, very much like Rebecca's first picture. However it is a very much Max's art work. He drew it at the same time Rebecca drew her fisherman. I can't remember how it all started, but I do like the end results.
Max has all sorts of creatures in his composition. Going from left to right I'll point them out. The three (yes there are three, the smallest one is tucked in the middle) yellow creatures are sea horses, to the right is a sea otter. I only know what it is because Max announced as he drew it that he loves sea otters. I think it looks more like a monkey (hey it's a sea monkey!). As we travel to the right there is a purple octopus and a couple of bright green sea turtles. Moving on there is the ubiquitous eel and a school of jellies. Just coming into view on the far right is a whale shark. Along the sea floor is a collection of hermit crabs, snails, a lobster, a crab and a lone star fish. I particularly love all the little creatures on the bottom. The hermit crabs in all their Lilliputian splendor are utterly adorable. Max's style is a bit messier, but he is a fine artist when he applies himself.

Artist of the Week: A Gift
This week's artist is little Miss. Rebecca.
She just constantly amazes us with her pictures. The girl is one person art show. Recycle day is always tough, because it's hard to decide which ones to keep and which ones to let go. She also loves to share her art. Every now and then will have a little flurry of drawings that need to be sent out to her grandparents and friends. And sometimes she'll draw something to give to us.
Last week Max was at one of his many regular doctor appointments. It was just Max, Rebecca and I. The older two were off with their father. Max went off with his doctor and Rebecca and I retired to the family waiting area/playroom. At first she hauled out some of the toys hidden in the room, but then she settled down with crayons and paper.
And this is what she created.
It is a wonderful undersea scape drawn just for Max. Unfortunately the picture is a bit on the pale side, I tried to bring it out as much as possible. The two main creatures are a sea turtle (Max's favorite animal) and a manatee. There are also a multitude of fish, a crab on the sea floor and a wonderful eel. I was very impressed, as were her brothers. In fact Jake declared it far better than anything he could make (well except for buildings and maps- which he does excel at).
She is quite a little artist.
She just constantly amazes us with her pictures. The girl is one person art show. Recycle day is always tough, because it's hard to decide which ones to keep and which ones to let go. She also loves to share her art. Every now and then will have a little flurry of drawings that need to be sent out to her grandparents and friends. And sometimes she'll draw something to give to us.

Artist of the Week: Still Life in Crayon
This week's artist is Rebecca.
Yes, I know she is completely over exposed in this picture, but I like it. Even when she is too close to the camera when the flash goes off, she is still too cute for her own good.
Anyway, she is still drawing up a storm and she presented Larry and I this piece about a week ago.
It really doesn't need much explanation. The item on the far left is a couch. I guessed a bed and was at first corrected, but then Rebecca said it could be either. I love the colors of the flowers and the little table the vase is perched on top. It is an utterly charming picture.
Oh, and the little thing on the floor to the right of the flowers, it's a mouse hole.

Artist of the Week: Submarine
This week’s artist is Jake.
A few weeks ago he came home with this neat cross section of a submersible.
I love the cut away view. The submersible has all sorts of neat details like multiple air tanks, a reinforced hull, and an exterior light array and so on. At school his class has been studying the ocean and this illustration was inspired by the ALVIN submersible.
It is fun seeing how he things these things through when he commits it to paper.

Artist of the Week: Wooden Toys
This week’s artist is a special two for one edition featuring both Max and Rebecca.
Last weekend Max was invited to a birthday party and Rebecca was not. At first I was a little miffed on her part and then I realized at some point they will have separate social circles and that they will not always be invited to the same parties. When I called up and accepted Max’s invite, the birthday boy’s mother told me that David (the birthday boy) wanted only boys at his party because “Girls are too loud.” (Which is a fair statement in regards to Rebecca.) Rebecca was a bit disappointed, but between an extravaganza of My Little Pony DVDs and my playing Candy Land with her she got over it very quickly. And let me state here: Candy Land is possible the world’s most boring game for an adult to play. There is no strategy, just the luck of the draw.
Anyway, all was fine until Max came home. He had received a balloon and a little kit to make a wooden biplane. She got a bit jealous and was coping until the bombshell hit.
Max told her that she had been invited and that David asked “where was Rebecca” when he first saw Max. She had a complete melt down. In the end I was able to calm her down when I pulled out an extra wooden race car from “the party box” that had been left over from an older brother’s birthday party.
Sometimes it pays to be a pack rat.
So here are the finished products:
I helped with the gluing and gave Max a few pointers on how to paint, but the color scheme was entirely up to Max and Rebecca. They love their new toys and are very pleased that they got to do some building and painting.
